Welcome!

Northwest Science Building

Welcome to the homepage of the first annual Boston Undergraduate Research Symposium (BURS)! Planned for April 11, 2009, BURS is an interdisciplinary research symposium that aims to bring together undergraduate researchers from several colleges and universities in the Boston area.

The Boston area is a vibrant center for research and a science conference hotspot. There is great potential in establishing a defined undergraduate research community in Boston. Helping foster such a community is essential to intellectual exchange between undergraduates from different colleges and research backgrounds. Naturally, such an exchange has numerous benefits, such as networking and gaining valuable insight into both similar and different research problems tackled by other undergraduates.

To help foster an undergraduate research community in Boston, we, the Harvard College Undergraduate Research Association (HCURA) are working with local colleges and universities to organize the first annual Boston Undergraduate Research Symposium (BURS). This professional symposium will bring together an estimated 350 undergraduate researchers from colleges and universities throughout the Boston area. Undergraduates from all research backgrounds are invited to send in abstracts. We envision BURS to be truly an interdisciplinary symposium, showcasing research ranging from basic biology, chemistry, and physics to more applied research, such as engineering and design solutions, translational medicine, economics, and the social sciences.

The first annual BURS will give undergraduates in the Boston area not only the chance to interact with their peers but also the chance to present their work to faculty from Boston-area colleges and universities. In addition, we hope to open up this symposium to the Boston community and invite local high school students to attend and observe the symposium.

If you are an undergraduate previously or currently involved in research, whether in the hard sciences, the social sciences, or the humanities, we encourage you to apply. To learn more about the mechanics of BURS, including deadlines and application information, browse the Apply link above or send us an email at burs@hcura.org. The 2009 symposium is planned for Sat. April 11, 2009 in the Northwest Science Building atrium of Harvard University, so please mark your calendars today!

Sincerely,
The 1st Annual BURS Steering Committee
